Brazilian Treasury Secretariat Public Finance Award – 2012

Programa de Seminários inicia-se com sala cheia!

O Programa de Seminários de Pesquisa CIEF/CERME/LAPCIPP/MESP teve início na quarta-feira passada com a sala lotada. Este semestre o programa homenageia os 40 anos de dedicação do prof. Charles Mueller à UnB.

O seminário apresentado pelo professor Charles Mueller contou com a presença do Reitor eleito da UnB, Prof. Dr. Ivan Camargo, entre outros participantes ilustres, que gentilemente aceitou encerrar oficialmente o evento antes do coquetel de confraternização.

2012-II Seminars start on October 24th honoring Emeritus Professor Charles Mueller

The CIEF, CERME, LAPCIPP and MESP joint seminar program starts its 2012-II cycle next Wednesday, October 24th, honoring the 40th anniversary of Emeritus Professor Charles Mueller at UnB. Professor Mueller will present the opening seminar on the Brazilian agricultural frontier.

A cocktail will be served after the opening seminar. Everyone is welcome to attend the event.

Paper on Court-Ordered Debt Payments at Estudos Econômicos

The article “A Emenda Constitucional dos Precatórios: Histórico, Incentivos e Leilões de Deságio”, on court-ordered debt payments in Brazil, has been accepted for publication at Estudos Econômicos. It is the result of collaborative work with Fernando Meneguin from the Brazilian Senate.

Estudos Econômicos is a top-ranked academic journal in Economic Theory and Applications in Brazil, created in 1971 and published four times a year by the Department of Economics of the School of Economics, Business and Accounting of the University of Sao Paulo.

Paper on Mechanism Design at Brasil Economia e Governo

The general interest article “O que é desenho de mecanismos e qual a importância de seu estudo?” was published today in the Economics blog “Brasil Economia e Governo”.

The article, in Portuguese,  introduces to the nonacademic reader the main concepts and ideas of the Mechanism Design area of research, which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize.

Brasil Economia e Governo is an economics and government blog that was selected the best economics & finance blog in Brazil in 2011 according to Top Blog. Its goal it to offer didactic analyses of economic questions that are highly relevant to Brazilian development, most especially those that depend on the government action.

Paper presentation, September 10, 2012 at Pol Sci

I will present the paper “Partisan Voluntary Transfers in a Fiscal Federation: New Evidence from Brazil.” this afternoon at 4pm at LAPCIPP, Political science Department, University of Brasilia. The presentation is part of LAPCIPP seminars program and will be held at the FA meeting room (sala da reunões da FA). The paper “Legisladores, Captadores a Assistencialistas: A Representação Política no Nível Local”, by Acir Almeida and Felix Lopez will also be discussed. LACEA-LAMES 2012 & Research

The article “Inequality and the Cost of Electoral Campaigns: The Cases of Brazil and Japan”  was accepted for presentation at the 2012 LACEA-LAMES meetings, to be held in Lima, Peru, in November 2012.

Americas Quarterly reviews “The Great Gap”

The Americas Quarterly just published a review of the book The Great Gap: Inequality and the Politics of Redistribution in Latin Americain which Adriana Portugal (Tribunal de Contas do Distrito Federal), Sergio Sakurai (FEA-USP/Ribeirão Preto) and myself have a chapter.

The book analyses the delicate balance between politics and inequality in Latin America. The Americas Quarterly is published by Americas Society and the Council of the Americas.

Robert D. Cooter Award – June 2012

Fernando Meneguin (Brazilian Federal Senate) and I were just awarded the Robert D. Cooter  ALACDE Award for Scholarship in Law and Economics. The award was announced during the 2012 ALACDE meeting in Peru and was handed to Fernando by prof. Cooter himself!
